The spotlight has shifted from the IT sector as a whole
to IT enabled services as one of the highest growth segments in the
country. At a time when the job market is dull and the economy is
under pressure, the ITES (IT enabled services) industry encompassing
call/contact centers and BPO (business process outsourcing) services
is providing tremendous new job opportunities.
Call Centres have caught on in a big way. Most of us have heard of one
part of ITES/business process outsourcing the call centers and there
has been a lot of talk about the social, economic and lifestyle
ramifications of this new phenomenon. While the lifestyle implications
of the call centre phenomenon are debatable, there is no denying that
this sector has provided a significant (and growing) number of jobs to
the two million English speaking college graduates churned out by
India every year, who otherwise had limited job options at relatively
low salaries. Call/Contact/customer interaction centers currently comprise over 80%
of total ITES revenues and are the fastest growing segment in the
industry.
